It is well known throughout the BMW world of the S54 engine fitted to the E46 M3 and Z3/Z4M models having rod bearing failures, With a recall from BMW in the early years of the production run this did not make the issue disappear or become a life time repair.
As with any engine bearing failure this can lead to catastrophic engine failure especially with and spirited driving or track use.
